The Department of Animal Science is one of the vibrant departments of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences. The department was launched in 2010, by its former name Animal Production and Extension, and changed to Animal Science in 2021. The department of Animal Science has one newly launched PhD Program in Animal Nutrition and three M.Sc. programs (Animal Production, Animal Genetics and Breeding, and Animal Nutrition). These three M.Sc. programs are also delivered in extension program at Woreta Agricultural, Technical and Vocational College (the satellite campus of the university). Besides, the department plans to open two PhD programs (Animal Production, Animal Genetics and Breeding) in the near future. The department possesses relatively energetic and qualified staff, well organized animal farms and laboratories. The department has well equipped laboratories in Animal Nutrition, Milk quality and processing, and Honey quality and processing. Furthermore, the department also has dairy, poultry, beef and apiary farms, forage development site and feed miller which serves as a center of practical skills for undergraduate and post-graduate students. In addition to the regular program, the department has also launched a mid-career program in Animal Sciences extension with collaboration of Sasakawa Global and Regional Government.
