The College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences (CVMAS) of the University of Gondar (UoG) was established in the year 2004 Ever since its establishment, the college has been putting immense contribution to the nation in the area of teaching-learning, research and community services that are the cornerstones of UoG.
For that reason, college staffs in collaboration with other stakeholders are undertaking several problem solving community service activities. Since 2014/15 (2007 EC) up to 2018/19 (2011 EC) a total of 20 UoG funded community service projects, 1 project funded by Central Diseases Control (CDC, USA) and 1 project funded by Wogera Woreda Livestock agency have been implemented. This year (2012 EC) 5 projects have selected for UoG grant after they have subjected to rigorous evaluation by panel of assessors. The following are community service activities undertaken during 2018/19 (2011 EC) academic year:
- Optimizing Antimicrobial Drug Use in Veterinary Practices to Combat Antimicrobial Drug Resistance in Three Gondar Zones of Amhara Region, Ethiopia (UoG funded).
- Training on poultry husbandry techniques and health for poultry enterprises and farmers in Central and North Gondar, Ethiopia (UoG funded).
- Establishment of practical oriented training to improve dairy cattle in Wogera woreda (Funded by Wogera Woreda Livestock agency).
- Rabies control (CDC funded)
Moreover, CVMAS delivers veterinary services to the surrounding community through the Open Air Veterinary Clinic. The clinical services are provided for a wide variety of domestic species, including food animal, equine, and companion animals. All academic, support staff, and clinical DVM students and MSc students in Clinical Medicine are engaged in treating all animals presented to the clinic. The clinic and consultancy service are occasionally also supported by mobile clinical service. Veterinary Teaching Hospital is under constriction just to upgrade the quality of the veterinary service at the CVMAS. The college has also 3 farm facilities consisting of dairy cows, poultry and laboratory animals. Through these facilities the college has delivering services to the surrounding community through provision of milk, egg and artificial insemination, and providing milk to UoG Hospital.
